Say Hello to Facebook Messenger for Windows

Facebook Messenger for Windows has been ready for download for a couple of months now but most of us are still unaware of its existence. Its download link was leaked late in 2011 and it took Facebook 3 months or so to get rid of existing bugs and test the application before publicly announcing that the application is ready to be downloaded.

What is Facebook Messenger for Windows?

Simply put, it is a desktop client that lets you chat and send messages to your Facebook friends without the use of that pesky web browser. This means you can move around on your desktop and use other applications and still get easy access to your Facebook chat windows without switching back and forth form your web browser.

In addition to chat and private messaging, Facebook Messenger also gives you notifications of new comments, tags, and more just like what you get on the Facebook website. The latest updates from your friends can also be viewed via the ticker. It’s like a mini Facebook right on your desktop that eliminates the need for you to constantly open your browser to see if there are new notifications or updates.

What operating system does it run on?

For now, only users of Windows 7 can install and use this application. The Facebook Messenger team is currently working on a Windows Vista version. No such luck for users of Windows XP and earlier version of Windows, though. Tough.

Does it require a separate login if I’m already logged in to the site on my browser?

Initially, no. You will be logged in to Facebook Messenger the first time you use it, that is of course if you are already signed in to Facebook.com. After this first use, your login sessions for Facebook Messenger will be different from your Facebook.com sessions.

Can I view notifications, messages and items on the ticker on Messenger?

No. Clicking on notifications, links to messages and items appearing on the ticker will open pages on your web browser. Make sure you’re logged in to Facebook.com to get a seamless Facebook experience across your desktop and Facebook.com.

Does Facebook Messenger have the same features as Facebook.com Chat?

Unfortunately, no. Group chats and video calls are still not supported by Facebook Messenger for Windows. Editing settings and limiting chat visibility are also features that — for now — is stuck in Facebook.com. These settings can still be applied by changing them on Facebook.com, which means your privacy settings and other preferences that you have set on Facebook.com will also be applicable to your Facebook Messenger application.

Installation

Installing Facebook Messenger only requires you to download the installer and that’s it. There’s actually no installation wizard or preferences to set.

The Bottom Line

While people who are always on Facebook.com (spending hours and hours on it without closing their browser) may not find Facebook Messenger for Windows compelling enough to install on their desktops, people who aren’t as obsessed probably will. It has a lot of room for improvement if it wants to be a legitimate desktop messenger application but for now, it can settle for a really efficient way of staying on top of Facebook without actually being on Facebook.com.

12 New Apps for Your Facebook Timeline

Facebook has announced their second wave of media apps that integrate seamlessly with the relatively new Facebook Timeline. The first wave of media apps that include Yahoo! News, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and The Independent has experienced success in the number of people using them. Quick adoption from other media companies followed suit thanks to this success. This new wave of apps include a combination of small and large businesses from all over the world. And now, let’s take a look at the new kids and see if which ones will eventually become regulars on our Timelines.

1. Buzzfeed

Buzzfeed has always been a source of content that we regularly see on Facebook so it’s a natural fit for the Timeline.

2. CBS Local

CBS Local New York and CBS Local Los Angeles provide local news for two of the most popular cities in the world.

3. Country Music Television

Country Music Television, or simply CMT, showcases the latest news and generally the best and brightest in Country music.

4. The Daily Show

Jon Stewart and his Daily Show crew never fail to make us laugh or at least chuckle, so having The Daily Show appearing regularly on people’s Timelines is a welcome development.

5. GetGlue

Aside from letting users announce which TV show or movie they are watching, which book they are reading, or which topic they are thinking about, GetGlue also rewards users with stickers, discounts, and the latest news on new releases. We can expect to see more of that on our Facebook Timelines in the coming months.

6. Huffington Post

As the self-proclaimed Internet Newspaper, we all know that Huffington Post news articles always litter our News Feeds, so it’s no surprise that it has joined the media apps brigade as well.

7. Mashable

For people who are into tech and social media news, one of the top content providers they rely on is Mashable. No surprises here either.

8. MSNBC.com

Like the Huffington Post and Mashable, MSNBC.com has always been a popular source for the latest news.

9. MTV News

It would be fun to get news about the actual music videos or at least music in general from MTV these days, but we can settle for general celebrity and entertainment news from their app.

10. Pixable

Pixable is not an app that you often hear about but with this Timelines integration, it’s possible that you will never stop hearing about it soon. It brings together the photos and videos from your Facebook friends’ profiles, so if you’re into that sort of thing, Pixable will make your day.

11. Sporting News

The aptly named Sporting News offers news, analysis and other exciting information related to — you guessed it — sports.

12. TODAY Show

It’s content from the gang over at the TODAY Show.

This bunch of content providers is a combination of entities looking to continue their already tight relationship with Facebook users and entities trying to find a new audience. The question, though, is if these social apps will actually make the Facebook experience better or more exhausting.

How To Embrace Your Facebook Timeline

There are two types of people in this new digital landscape — those who aren’t really affected by layout and feature changes in Facebook and those who curse the heavens because of it. If you’re one of the latter, you have to know that you have two options. First option is you can leave it all behind and swear off Facebook forever. The second option is to simply suck it up and embrace change.

With Facebook Timeline’s imminent arrival as the default profile for users, now is the time to pick a side. If you simply can’t stomach Facebook Timeline, go fort and find your new hangout elsewhere. We hear Google+ is nice. However, if you want to embrace your shiny new profile, you have to know what you’re getting yourself into. Here are are some tips on how to make this transition as painless as possible.

Understand Timeline.

The first step in accepting your new profile overlord is to understand with it is. Facebook Timeline brings a radical upgrade to your profile with new features that turn your usually lifeless profile into a virtual scrapbook. True to its name, Facebook Timeline lets you document your entire life using photos, videos, links, events and status updates. It’s all contained in one continuous feed of posts arranged in a pretty way.

Be creative with your cover photo.

One thing that gives it that visual punch is the new Cover Photo. On top of your timeline sits a large photo that you can change whenever you want. It overlaps with your profile photo which gives you a window to be creative on your Facebook profile. If you let your imagination run wild, setting your cover photo could be the most fun part of this whole Timeline business.

Fill out your past.

Before Timeline, you can only document your day-to-day life from the day you joined Facebook up to the present. With Timeline, you can now add events before the day you joined Facebook. You can actually start on the day you were born. You can pick several categories from the menu bar to tell people whether the event is related to work and education, family and relationships, home and living, health and wellness or travel and experiences. You can literally spend days filling out your Timeline. Obviously, if there’s something you don’t want to appear on your Timeline, don’t add it.

Control your privacy.

Most of the negative feelings from people who don’t want Timeline to invade their Facebook accounts stem from the issue of privacy. Once Timeline kicks in, it can potentially shine some light into past Facebook posts that you would rather not see again. Don’t panic just yet. You are not helpless in this fight. There is a new Activity Log section where you can adjust the privacy settings of all your individual posts. It will take some effort especially if you’ve been in Facebook for a long time already, but no pain, no gain, right? As for your new life event posts, remember that the default setting is Public, so make sure you adjust it if you don’t want everyone to see it.

The Bottom Line

We all know that some people are overreacting over this whole thing but there are legitimate concerns out there that justify the worries of some rational people. However, all of these concerns, mostly about privacy, can be overcome in two simple ways — suck it up and take your time in adjusting your privacy settings or deactivate your account and leave forever.

Ondango: How to Sell Products Directly From Your Company’s Facebook Page

Ondango recently launched a new service that allows any business to integrate a full e-commerce site into their Facebook page. If your business sells clothing, for example, and you use your Facebook page to garner fans and make announcements, you can now sell your clothing items directly within your Facebook page with Ondango. Users never have to leave your Facebook page, they manage their shopping cart and checkout directly on Facebook.

Your online store appears as a tab on your Facebook page:

Checkout process happens on Facebook:

Ondango’s CEO Jose Matias del Pino says that an additional advantage with their platform is that the user never has to accept a Facebook data request. We’re all familiar with the annoying popups that ask us whether we grant the application to access our personal information from Facebook – del Pino says that they saw an 80% dropoff rate in their testing at that popup. This is a significant stat for any business to be aware of – when integrating Facebook into your applications, be aware that that dropoffs can be sky high and you could be alienating a large percentage of your user base.

While selling products on your Facebook page will never likely be your core business – it is a nice feature to offer to your customers, especially those who are highly active on Facebook. Many customers are not accustomed to making purchases on Facebook, however, so its best to have a separate e-commerce platform as well.
